The Lemesos International Documentary Festival starts this Monday, August 1, 2022 at 8:30pm at the Lanitis Carob Mill in Limassol.  Supported by the non-profit Brave New Culture, the event brings together local and international creatives and celebrates the art of contemporary documentary film.

This year’s festival kicks off with the screening of “A Marble Travelogue” directed by Sean Wang. The film unveils a surprising and complex supply chain system of marble excavated in Greece, carved in China, and sent for sale in the West. Wang intimately explores those working within this globalized system: miners based in Greece, Greek entrepreneurs, Chinese businessmen, factory workers and their children, French marble dealers, and end consumers. Viewers witness the elaborate commoditization of ancient materials and new products and the power of China’s market force.

The festival has an additionally diverse lineup of documentaries of international recognition each revealing political, societal, and personal truths and pains of their subjects. In “Los Angeles Plays Itself,” director Thom Anderson presents a unique video essay showing how Hollywood birthed and distorted the image of the city of Los Angeles.  The film “Days And Nights of Demetra K.” by Eva Stefani observes Demetra, a sex worker and owner of one of the oldest brothels in Athens, over the course of twelve years, also illuminating the effects the financial crises had and has on the city. Snow Hnin Ei Hlaing’s “Midwives” follows the lives of two midwives, of different religions, based in Myanmar who work side-by-side to provide medical services in a state entangled in chaos and violence.

There will be looped screenings of Rebel Dykes by Harri Shanahan, Siân A. Williams throughout the festival. The documentary is set is 1980’s post-punk London and is about the unheard of story of a community of queer women who met participating in art, music, and politics. The festival will conduct workshops and panels inspired by this film to showcase the innovative ways queer women have impacted art and photography as well as about the lesbian and feminist movement on the island of Cyprus.

You can view the full festival’s schedule here and full film list here.

Tickets to the festival are €5 per film or you can purchase a €40 festival pass (valid for all screenings) here. The festival will run from Monday, August 1st to Monday August 8th.
